Future of connected transport at Fleet Live 2019Back

Innovate UK and Vodafone will update the fleet industry on how the UK’s strategic road network will evolve in the future at Fleet Live 2019.

Karla Jakeman, Innovate UK connected transport innovation lead and Peter Leavy, Vodafone Internet of Things (IoT) portfolio manager Connected Car Services, will both be presenting on the topic of “efficient movement of people and goods on the strategic road network” as part of Fleet Live’s Strategy Theatre at this year’s show.

Fleet Live is the UK’s leading event for the fleet management community and gives decision-makers the chance to face future challenges and opportunities together with two days of learning, sharing and networking at the NEC in Birmingham on October 8-9.

Jakeman’s session will look at the importance of collaboration, current funding opportunities and the latest projects and technologies that are emerging as part of the development of the SRN.

She said: “My session will give fleets an overview of where we currently are in the UK when it comes to connected transport on the roads.

“How important it’s going to be to encourage collaboration and the opportunities that are available for funding new projects.”

Part of Jakesman’s role at Innovate UK is seeking solutions which use innovative technologies to leverage a smarter, greener and more sustainable future mobility systems for the efficient movement of people and goods around the world.

Leavy will provide a perspective from the telecoms industry and how technology upgrades and the rollout of 5G are going to transform how fleets communicate with their vehicles and transport infrastructure.

Vodafone is a member of the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), which is a global, cross-industry organisation of companies from the automotive, technology, and telecommunications industries (ICT), working together to develop end-to-end solutions for future mobility and transportation services.

Leavy said: “There’s dual investment that’s needed for the future connected road network and I’ll be talking about how 5G is developing in the UK and some key milestones over the next 10 years as connected car technology and infrastructure develops.

“There will be an increasing demand for 5G connectivity in the road network and in areas for transport, alongside investment for where people are using their smart technology.

“There will be big impacts for fleets on areas like safety, telematics and efficiency.”

The “Efficient movement of people and goods on the strategy road network” seminar session will be held on day two at Fleet Live on October 9 at 14:00.

  • There are over 20 seminar sessions available at Fleet Live 2019 this year across Strategy, Operations and Discover Fleet Theatres. For more information on the full line-up of speakers and agenda head to fleet-live.co.uk
